5 Helpful Tips For Moving Into College Dorms

A student or an employee sets on a journey by searching and applying for a job or university. Fortunately, you got accepted, and then you celebrated with your friends or family or both. You’re now focused on your accommodation since it is far from your home. You thought about staying in a dormitory because it’s a lot cheaper than apartments and condominiums. However, you don’t know where to start, where probably you’re just new or confused. So here are the five helpful tips for moving into college dorms.

1. Plan To Go Early

This is the best practice, especially if you’re conscious about what to bring, which might probably you listed too much that your space wouldn’t be enough. By doing this, you can inspect your future dorm and decide if it’s the right fit for you. That way, you don’t have to worry mostly about everything since you know everything you’ve been wondering about.

2. Ask The Right Questions

It is considered an alternative if you have no time to visit your future dorm for inspection. Start by saying hello and follow up with a sincere question from its Facebook page. That way, you’re trying to build a healthy relationship with the dorm manager or the owner.

Here are some specific questions you should ask:

  • What are the exact dorm dimensions?
  • Is parking available, and are there parking fees?
  • Where are the laundry facilities?
  • What small appliances can I bring? Are refrigerators allowed in rooms?
  • Are there are any rules for water or electricity use?
  • What is the number of electrical outlets in rooms?
  • Is there free Wifi available?
  • What are the bedding options?
  • What are the rules for common areas?
  • What are the visiting hours?
  • How far are the dorms from the main campus?
  • How do I contact campus security in case of an emergency?

3. Bring What’s Truly Necessary

Now you have the dorm picture in mind, you can think about what things to bring. You can get your tech devices and mini-refrigerator for your own. But remember to manage your own space and learn to edit your list of things to bring so that you don’t have to ship out or throw out anything when you realize that your dorm room is too small for your desk and cabinet. Note that you shouldn’t bring kinds of stuff with fire hazard capabilities.

4. Think About Rooming With Your Friend

Will it be more fun when you’re best friend is with you? That way, you can comfortably share the room as if you and your best friend are brothers or sisters. But that doesn’t mean you have the free will to do anything inside the room, because both of you still need privacy and your own terms and conditions, such as sharing, for example. So, respect each other’s belongings and privacy.

5. Have a Roommate Contract

One of the first things you and your roommate want to do is set up an agreement. This is where you will explain your preferences and figure out a way to make sure you are both comfortable in your space. You’re probably asking, “what goes into a roommate contract?”

Here are some suggestions:

  • Set study hours or quiet hours for your room
  • Preferences around what you can borrow from each other (food, clothes, etc.)
  • Rules around when the door will be locked or unlocked
  • When visitors are allowed and how long they can stay

To Wrap-Up…
